Reaction III

A Photograph - is a word out of two words - first Photo - from the Latin word "Photon" witch means Light and second word is Graph from Graphic - so all together it is a "Light Drawing". The term "photography" is not a reference to an idea or a picture making style. It is the invented name for a particular process. The application of the chemical rays of light to the purpose of pictorial representation. It's an expression which uses light.
How were the first pictures made? They were possibly scratching in the sand which led to cave paintings. Is a picture a flattened piece of sculpture, or is it the other way around? The same motivation that prompted the earliest art is still with us. It emerges as sculpture, photos, and other prints. What is that motivation? Sometimes it is to record the likeness of family members, sometimes of game to be hunted or a memory we want to keep. What other motivations are there? The photo comes from an inner need.
So who am I to judge when a photography is not a photograph anymore. Use our imaginations to create what we want or want to see. The only time I can really judge a photography is when boundaries are set. When we only want to see a fisherman fishing out his boat and I get a clown on a tricycle. This is not a photo to me, because boundaries were set and not met. Since the photo comes from an inner need and is essentially a light drawing its hard to judge. For example, a photo is a light drawing and everything touches light or is made up of light because if it weren’t we would have a black picture, a photo of nothing, which is perhaps another example of when that’s not considered a photo anymore. (BUT it all lies within the person who wants to interpret it, meaning black picture represents evil, death, a shadow ect.) The inner need is what we want to capture. For me to judge someone on this would mean I’m judging what I want to see or feel through my experiences through their work. What I’m trying to say is essentially I will only consider a photography not a photography anymore is when there are boundaries and the participant crosses them, or a black photo meaning there was no light involved, nothing was captured.

  1. Wow! I really liked your post. You made a lot of great points. I really like how you could even consider a black picture of nothingness a photo. It really does just matter to the person who is interpreting the photo.
