What is photography?
Most examples of alterations that people make to photographs listed in the article included either manipulating the photo during the photo-shooting process, or manipulating it afterwards in photoshop. To me, these are two completely different elements. Manipulating a photo during the shooting process is genearlly done to get the nicest quality possible, and sometimes helps capture an image that is closer to what is really happening. Cameras are not perfect- they are not human eyes, so the faults of a camera can sometimes be helped while making adjustments to compensate for this (such as changing lightness/darkness). On the other hand, I believe that photoshop is a tool that should be used minimally. People are beginning to use it like it is the most important part in photography. Photographers change anything and everything with a picture and can essentially change it entirely. Photoshop changes everything that is real and makes it unreal for the most part. Sometimes however, unreal is the goal. Occasionally we may want to make something look ridiculous and unreal, or attempt to portray an image that we simply cannot perceive with our human eyes. This is when I think the heavy use of photoshop is acceptable. Like in the article, the photo involving a tornado and motorcyclist doesn't seem to be that big of a "sin" to me in the photography world. When I was thinking of what this photo might look like, I imagined the sensation/feeling of adrenaline and excitement. It's just a crazy event and probably isn't supposed to make sense. (Not to mention, I might know some crazy people that would go on a motorcycle in the middle of a tornado to be honest). When all is said and done, the line between real photography and a load of b.s. is what is trying to be portrayed as realistic or unrealistic. This may not make a lot of sense, but if something is meant to look unreal, photoshop is necessary since we cannot capture the impossible on a camera. However, when people photoshop something that's meant to be wholesome and real to simply make it look "picture perfect" that is where photography dies.

I agree, I think that there needs to be another category for photoshopped photography. There are some instances when it is needed and you can make something that the camera cannot. But it is also changed for wrong reasons when a photo is not a photo anymore.
