What is Photography?

I found this article to be a very interesting debate. For years, I have had a problem with photographers that can manipulate anything and publish it; from changing a person’s body to combining photos to make one. This manipulation is not the art of photography. To me, the art of photography is being there in the moment. It means getting up very early in the morning to drive to that location in which you’ll be able to capture the best sunset ever. It can mean staying in one location for an extended period of time to get that perfect shot. It means taking numerous photos of the same subject at many angles to capture that ideal photo.

If I were responsible for a photo contest, the combining of photos would not be allowed in the same contest as, what I call photography. To me, the “art” of photography is not only the use of a camera; it is also the talent of the person holding the camera. It is this talent that captures the moment that creates great photography. In some cases, software, such as Photoshop, can make up for the lack of talent of the photographer. I believe that there is a place in this world for manipulated photography but it would need its own contest in order for it to be judged on equal grounds.
