I feel that PhotoShop is fun to work with and to discover the endless elements that can change an image but for a photo contest I think it should not be used. Good old fashioned photography should not be pushed aside for something else to completely take its place. I discovered, personally, that when I go out into a natural setting, all the elements of nature come together and can often produce a wonderful photograph. Whether it is natural lighting or bright sunshine or even a flash at dusk there is alot to work with to create a nice photo.
PhotoShop can enhance the brightness of a photo, for example, but I think that many photographers have forgotten about the magic of the natural elements. I feel that for a photo contest the rules should be specified as to what is accepted. I think that a real photo contest should ban PhotoShop alterations. Why not have it true to what a person captures with their camera? As for advertising, that is a whole different issue. Advertising agencies will do whatever it takes to sell their products. Touching up models, creating ads in magazines that are far from any real photos are what graphic design is all about these days.
A photography magazine should at least honor the history of photography by not forgetting about real photography. The nitty-gritty get down in the dirt, crossing the streams, rumbling through the terrain to get that shot of an animal or horizon in the middle of nowhere is what true photographers are willing to do. It takes some hard work, a lot of foot pounding and a lot of shots to find that one magical image. PhotoShop is simply a whole different ballgame.
