Reaction Paper 5

The famous photographer I chose is John Corney.  He addresses the concept of landscape in his work by providing a very broad space.  Corney shows several objects in each photo because many of his photographs are taken from far away.  By doing this, he demonstrates the area and its surroundings, thus providing a better understanding of the "feel" of the area.  In some of his photographs, he shows a sunset in a long view with a large amount of land before the sunset.  Also, he takes several photos of lakes and the trees surrounding it.  One of the favorite aspects of his landscape photography is how he includes a large portion of sky into his photos.  The big sky and clouds really add a beautiful touch in my opinion.  It is personally my favorite look to landscape photography when the photographs are taken from further away.  However, Corney brings different styles into his own photography every now and then as well, so they are not all the same.  There are a couple photos where he has close-ups, and that is perfectly fine- it's just not my favorite thing, nor probably his favorite thing either.  Also, he has a picture called "Sunset at Matiatia Wharf Waiheke Island."  This photoraph shows boats and docks, which is necessary otherwise the title would not make much sense.  My point is, Corney is including some manmade objects into his landscape photograph.
This relates to my work and what I decided to do with my project because the majority of my photographs are long-distance shots.  I like to include several things to see in a photograph because it gives a better idea of what a place is, rather than just a thing.  For example, if a close-up photograph of a tree is taken, it still can be considered landscape photography, but it's not as descriptive of the area as a whole.  No one knows whether a barn, skyscraper or lake is next to the tree in the photograph.  Like Corney, I chose to include a lot of sky in the majority of my photographs.  Also, in at least one of my photos I showed a manmade object as well- a barn.  I really wanted this because it helps bring together the idea of all of my photographs since I live in a rural area with lakes and farms everywhere.  All in all, my goal was to capture the environment I've lived in my entire life.  I have many pictures of a few different lakes and ponds because I have always loved the water and how beautiful it looks.  I also wanted to include the small town/country look with the barn, the town hall in the middle of nowhere and one shot of my town's main street which has an old style.  I chose to take these kinds of photographs because the area I live in means a lot to me and I absolutely love the setting I live in.  I think it is very peaceful, beautiful and quiet.

  1. I also chose Corney as my favorite photographer. I actually have this same photograph on my desktop because I liked it so much. He does a beautiful job capturing all the different color in the sunset. The photographs he has of sunsets are spectacular. I love them!

  2. I really like Corney's work as well- his pictures are just so beautiful and they capture so much in them that are absolutely amazing. And I agree that further away pictures are better because they do contain so much more of the scene. The only thing is if you are trying to focus on one thing but if its scenery then most likely not. His photos are stunning.
