I recall reading a book a number of years ago, written by a man, about how he had spent considerable time working with a very primitive tribe somewhere in the jungle. These people had previously had zero contact with the outside world. On one of his visits he brought along a movie projector, screen and a small generator. He set this up one evening and showed them a film that he'd shot of them the previous year.
His observation of what happened was very revealing. Until what they were seeing was explained to them none of these people understood what it was that was on the screen. Mellissa’s photos remind me of this man. Her sir-real pictures bringing concrete evidence of real people in real time. She had the ability to draw a connection between reality and the abstraction of reality.
Her best picture seems to be the photo titled “girl ascending.” To me this picture is so concrete its abstract. (ironic yes?) What I mean is that there is so much going on in this picture it can be perceived into so many assumptions. Is she tired? She looks cold. Stressed it seems wrapping herself up and looking up to God as if she wanted to ask “why?” Maybe she happen to catch a glimpse of a plane or a bird. The ball was perhaps used in a game. The game had lost intrest and in the moment just wanted to feel the breeze across her skin. Dig her toes into the muddy sand of the lake.
